California Lutheran University
California Lutheran University is a private liberal arts university founded in 1959 and opened in 1960 in Thousand Oaks, California, approximately 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles. It was the first four-year private college in Ventura County and became a university in 1986. Cal Lutheran sits on a scenic 290-acre campus and serves over 4,200 students from 67 countries, making it a genuinely international institution.
The university is organized into five academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences (33 majors), the School of Management, the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Psychology, and the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Cal Lutheran holds the designation of a Hispanic-Serving Institution and is known for its strong outcomes — 94% of graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within a year of completing their degree.
Cal Lutheran is well recognized in regional and national rankings. U.S. News & World Report ranked it No. 6 among regional universities in the Western United States in 2022, and The Economist ranked it 19th nationally for economic value. The campus has a notable athletic heritage: the Dallas Cowboys held summer training camps at Cal Lutheran from 1963 to 1989, earning the university the nickname the West Coast's 'Cradle of Coaches', and the Los Angeles Rams have used the facilities since 2016.
