University of Debrecen
The University of Debrecen is a public research university in Debrecen, Hungary, and the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education in Hungary, with roots dating back to 1538 as the Calvinist College of Debrecen. It was reorganised as a Hungarian Royal University in 1912 and took its modern form through a 2000 merger of several Debrecen institutions into a single 13-faculty university.
With approximately 30,000 students and nearly 6,000 international students from over 100 countries, the University of Debrecen is one of the largest and most international universities in Central Europe. English-language instruction has been offered since 1886, and today the university runs more than 80 degree programmes fully taught in English across 13 faculties: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Informatics, Economics and Business, Law, Music, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Humanities, Public Health, and Child and Special Needs Education.
The university is particularly well-known internationally for General Medicine (MD), Dentistry (DMD) and Pharmacy (PharmD) programmes taught entirely in English, which are recognised across the EU, UK and many other jurisdictions. The Faculty of Medicine teaching hospital (Clinical Centre) is the largest in Hungary, and Debrecen also hosts Komondor, Hungary's largest supercomputer, supporting research in life sciences, physics and informatics.
