Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a public tertiary education institution founded in 1905 as Nelson Technical School, making it one of the oldest vocational education providers in New Zealand. Renamed NMIT in 2000, it serves the Te Tauihu (Top of the South) region from three campuses in Nelson, Richmond, and Marlborough (Blenheim). NMIT is a NZQA Category 1 approved provider and ISO 9001 certified, offering over 100 programmes from certificate to postgraduate level. As of January 2026 it operates as an independent entity after departing Te Pūkenga.
NMIT's programmes are deeply connected to the industries that define the Top of the South — aquaculture and marine conservation, viticulture and winemaking, maritime training, aviation engineering, and adventure tourism. The institution hosts the International Maritime Institute of New Zealand (IMINZ) and is one of few polytechnics in New Zealand offering a Bachelor of Aquaculture and Marine Conservation and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture. The Marlborough campus sits at the heart of New Zealand's premier wine-producing region.
The Computing and Information Technology faculty delivers programmes from certificate level through to a three-year Bachelor of Information Technology and a Graduate Diploma in IT, with strong industry links to Nelson's growing tech sector. Creative Industries students can study Bachelor of Arts and Media, music production, design, and computer-generated imagery. The English Language department runs internationally recognised NZCEL programmes at Levels 3–5 and foundation pathways that feed directly into degree-level study.
