College of San Mateo
College of San Mateo (CSM) was founded in 1922 as San Mateo Junior College, making it one of the oldest community colleges in California. Situated on a 153-acre suburban campus in the San Francisco Bay Area, CSM has been at its current College Heights location since 1963. The college is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and holds accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). With an enrollment of over 13,000 students, CSM serves as a gateway to California's most prestigious universities and leading Silicon Valley employers.
CSM offers more than 69 Associate degree majors and 81 certificate programs spanning Business, Computer Science, Nursing, Liberal Arts, Kinesiology, Multimedia, and many other fields. Transfer pathways to UC and CSU campuses are a core strength, enabling students to complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree at a fraction of the cost before transferring to institutions such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, or San Francisco State University. The college's MESA Program provides dedicated STEM support, and the campus is designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI).
International students from over 50 countries study at CSM through the Center for Global Engagement (CGE), which provides dedicated enrollment support, study abroad programs, and cultural initiatives such as World Chat and World Gala. Admitted international students must meet an IELTS Academic Band 5.5 (or TOEFL iBT 56 / Duolingo 85) and can enroll in CSM's five-level ESL program to strengthen language skills before entering credit-bearing academic pathways. The open-enrollment model and comparatively affordable tuition make CSM an attractive first step into the US higher education system.
