About the university

Victoria University of Wellington

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington was founded in 1897 by an act of the New Zealand Parliament, originally named Victoria College in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Located in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, the university benefits from its proximity to government, parliament, and major cultural institutions, giving students unrivalled opportunities for internships, research partnerships, and professional engagement.

Victoria University is ranked #240 in the 2026 QS World University Rankings (4th in New Zealand) and consistently features in the Times Higher Education Top 250, reflecting its strong research output and academic quality. The university is organised into seven faculties — Architecture and Design Innovation, Business and Government, Education/Health/Psychological Sciences, Graduate Research, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, and Science and Engineering — spanning a comprehensive range of disciplines.

International students are welcomed across all seven faculties, and the university maintains four campuses: the leafy Kelburn Campus overlooking Wellington harbour, the Pipitea Campus near Parliament, the creative Te Aro Campus in the CBD arts district, and Auckland Premises for postgraduate and executive students. Foundation Studies for international students are delivered by UP Education partner with guaranteed pathway to undergraduate entry.
