Western Washington University
Western Washington University is a public regional university founded in 1893 and located in Bellingham, Washington — the northernmost university in the contiguous United States. The 215-acre main campus sits on Sehome Hill overlooking Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands, about 90 minutes north of Seattle and 50 minutes south of Vancouver, BC.
WWU enrols around 14,700 students across seven colleges: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Business and Economics, Fine and Performing Arts, Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, College of the Environment, and Woodring College of Education. It is ranked #18 among Regional Universities West by U.S. News (2025).
Western is best known for its College of the Environment — the first dedicated environmental college in the United States, founded in 1969 — and for strong programs in Marine Biology, Computer Science, Visual Journalism, and Philosophy. It is one of only two U.S. Department of Education centres for Canadian Studies and a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers.
